Learning Disability Week 2024 – My Voice
Monday 17 June, 2024Monday 17th – Sunday 23rd June marks Mencap’s Learning Disability Week, a week which celebrates the things people with a learning disability bring to society.
The theme for Learning Disability Week this year is “Do you see me?” and looks to challenge the barriers people with learning disabilities face. There are seven different topics throughout the week.
To kickstart the week, we take a look at our latest My Voice initiative where we hear from people we support about what’s important to them, including the places they like to visit and their favourite activities. The initiative involves people we support actively taking and directing photographs to illustrate their thoughts and preferences, along with submitting a short description to explain why the subject captured is so important. Submissions will be shared in a picture book which will be shared and enjoyed by the wider organisation.
Submissions for the book have been excellent and people we support have been excited to contribute to the book. At Real Life Options we believe that the voices of people we support should guide their support, inspire communities and influence the wider organisation and the book will be a fantastic way to hear the thoughts of people we support. We hope that the book encourages wider conversations around person-centred support which can further improve health and happiness.
