Sam dressed as Batman

We are delighted to announce that Sam, who we support in Dunfermline was recently named in the 2024 New Years Honours as a recipient of the British Empire Medal (BEM). The new years honours list recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK.

The Medal which is awarded for a ‘hands-on’ service to the local community such as charitable or voluntary activity was awarded to Sam for his service within the community in Dunfermline after receiving multiple nominations from across the area.

We caught up with Sam’s mum, Gillian to find out more about the incredible news.

Speaking about Sam’s fantastic achievement Gillian says, “ The beginning of December I had a call from the Cabinet office and I was shocked! It’s the work Sam did during lockdown that really inspired it. When Covid struck, Sam would come shopping with me to help. There were people who couldn’t get out so Sam would help me pick up people’s shopping and deliver it.”

Sam’s work in the community also saw him complete the ‘Lap the Map’ challenge and walk an impressive 700 miles to raise money for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity. Dressed as Batman and known as ‘Bat Sam’, Sam joined the Dunfermline Superheroes on one of his walks.

Sam’s list of impressive community work doesn’t end there! During Lockdown, Sam was praised for baking cakes for people to enjoy on their birthdays and to spread some cheer to people across the community. Gillian says, “Everywhere Sam goes, he wants to help.”

Real Life Options believe that everyone should feel valued in their community. People we support are encouraged to contribute to their communities, learn new skills and try new experiences which enable greater independence. Attending our day service, Real Life Options support Sam to explore the local community. Gillian says, “From the very first day we visited Real Life Options, Sam loved it. He settled in right away. I couldn’t fault any of the staff.”

Congratulations on the incredible achievement Sam! As a recipient of the British Empire Medal, Sam will attend this year’s summer Royal garden party to celebrate in true style. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates and stories.
